On 12th April our Year 13 college students donned their best outfits for our 2019 Spring Ball. After a student vote, members of the Mirfield College team spent a huge five hours transforming the John Smith’s Stadium to reflect the 1920’s “Great Gatsby” theme.
The students started arriving at 7pm in their beautiful dresses and very smart suits, oozing Gatsby glamour. They then took an opportunity to have their pictures taken by Cream Photography while also sneaking a few cheeky selfies with the Mirfield College logo that was projected on the scoreboard of the Stadium.
At 8pm the students sat down to a very tasty hot fork buffet while casting their votes for the night’s Student Awards Ceremony. After finishing the meal the DJ cranked up the volume and the vast majority of students were on their feet and dancing within seconds. It needs to be mentioned that they had to practically be dragged off of the dancefloor for their food! Some of the song choices included Stop by the Spice Girls, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and You Wot by DJ Q – something for everyone, let’s say!
After some more persuasion, we again managed to get them off of the dancefloor and sat down for a game of ‘heads’ or ‘tails’ and the awards ceremony itself. Reluctant as some were to stop throwing shapes, once everyone was sat they had a fun time, although there may have been some cheating!!
Next we moved on to the awards ceremony, and categories included: Best Dressed Male and Female, Most Likely to be the Next Alan Sugar, Designer of The Year, Most Likely to Win an Olympic Medal, Most Likely to become Prime Minister, Most Likely to Rule the World, Least Likely to wear their ID Badge and Cutest Couple. All of the winners received a certificate, a round of applause and enjoyed a crème egg. As Mr Fryer had a birthday during the Easter Holidays, he was surprised with a caterpillar cake and a round of Happy Birthday that was sang by all.
The DJ then resumed the dance music and the students and staff danced the night away before heading home for a 12pm finish (or for some more dancing, we won’t mention any names, you know who you are!)
All in all a fab evening for our amazing year 13’s. Thanks to our wonderful Student Council and staff for making it happen.
