The Computer Science course will challenge, drive and excite those students interested in programming and developing computer systems or looking at how digital information systems work and communicate. Computer Science will provide students with the fundamentals of computing and has a strong, practical programming element. Students will have the opportunity to study different programming languages ranging from Python to PHP. They will learn about the theoretical side of computational thinking and look at how advanced computer programs and algorithms can be used to solve different problems.
If you have an interest in developing your programming and logical thinking skills and like to code, then this is the course for you. Students should already have an interest in all things to do with computers and should have studied a computing-related course at GCSE. Whilst not essential, this course is well suited to students also studying Mathematics and Physics.
College students in the Computer Science department have the opportunity to participate in the National Student Robotics Competition and other STEAM related opportunities.

Students who have successfully completed this course can go on to study Computer Science at university. Students can also pursue aspirational careers in fields such as web development, software engineering, electrical engineering and artificial intelligence. Computer Science is also well suited to those who wish to undertake an apprenticeship. Many digital and technology companies in West Yorkshire are keen to employ young people who are able to code and have a theoretical knowledge of how computers work.
We recommend students research their potential future career paths or university courses in order to identify specific subjects they are required to study at A Level in order to access that programme of study or field.
