Mirfield College

Meet the Team

Kate Walker - Head of College

I joined Mirfield College in January 2018 and I have been teaching now for 13 years. I am a teacher of Law and Criminology as well as Head of College.

I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BA in Criminology and Social Policy. I worked for the Crown Prosecution Service before completing my PGCE at York St John University.

I have a lot of experience in safeguarding and wellbeing and one of the most important aspects of my job is ensuring that students are happy. I love teaching and I hope that my passion for Criminology and the justice system inspires another generation to learn more about it – and make it better.

In my spare time I love reading, walking and spending time with my young niece and nephews. I like music gigs, going to the cinema and theatre, and trying out new restaurants and venues with my friends.

Nic Boulton - College Achievement Co-Ordinator

I joined Mirfield College in Jan 2020 in my 25th year of teaching. I love my job as a science teacher. Being able to inspire young people and see them develop into amazing young adults is such a privilege.

After graduating from the University of Leeds with a degree in Molecular Biophysics I stayed on for a further year to complete my PGCE in secondary education. I began teaching straight away and navigated my way through my first job with a young family.

Now my boys are grown up, I love travelling whenever I can. I have been lucky enough to visit family in Australia and New Zealand as well as tour Canada and the west coast of the United States.

I love watching, umpiring, judging and playing sports, hockey being my favourite. I have represented the North of England Masters (over45s) in the regional finals and recently played an international game against Scotland.

Sport is an important part of my life. I have been lucky enough to teach 2 Olympians and support a number of students who have represented their country at European, Commonwealth and World levels, whilst completing their sixth form studies. Maybe the next one could be you!

My friends describe me as determined, resilient, hard working, approachable dependable and organised. These are qualities that I also respect in other people.

I look forward to working with you to realise your dreams with Mirfield College.

Outside of College, I am a big sports fan especially rugby league and Formula 1 and I am trustee of the Batley Sporting Foundation which aims to unite communities through sport.

Tracy Denham - Attendance Officer & Student Finance

I have 17 years' experience at Mirfield College and I currently am the attendance officer. My role is to support students to have high attendance which will enable them to achieve their best in their subjects. I am also the 16-19 Bursary co-ordinator supporting students to receive financial help in college.

When I am at home I enjoy baking, reading and hill walking. I am currently trying to walk all the Wainrights in the Lake District and have completed 96 out of 214, I still have a long way to go!

I have a small dog called Frank who enjoys walking these with me.
